Best SUP Boards FAQ's

Best SUP Boards FAQ

Can a stand up paddle board be used for fishing? Will there be enough room for all my gear?

This depends on the SUP. Some are designed specifically for touring and racing, but there are boards for things like yoga and fishing. As for your gear, many SUPs feature D-rings, bungee cords, etc for extra gear.

If you want a fishing SUP you should search for those features.

Can I take my dog out on the SUP with me?

Usually, yes. SUPs are big as a general rule, and most can hold two people (adults). Taking a dog long should be no problem. Just be sure to check the board's weight limit beforehand.

Which better: An inflatable or solid SUP?

Inflatable stand up paddle boards (iSUPs) have become increasingly popular. They are incredibly lightweight which makes them easy for travel and when they deflate they do not take up much space. They are constructed of tough PVC and made to be durable. However, it is an inflatable, and they are notoriously prone to punctures and air leakage.

On the other hand, solid SUPs are incredibly durable and you can use them to catch small waves too. They are designed to be life-long boards, and will generally last a long time before they need to be replaced. The downside is that they weigh more than iSUPs and can be a little difficult to cart around.

So to answer your question, the choice of board is yours. They both have advantages and disadvantages and you should choose the one that best suits your needs.

How would I care for my SUP? Is there special instructions that I need to know?

There are 3 things you need to do to care for your SUP:

1.  Rinse it off after every use. Then carefully check it over for any bumps or scratches (solid board), or for punctures and air leakage (iSUP).

2.  Keep it out of direct sunlight when not in use. UV damage will destroy your board easily.

3.  And finally, store it in a safe place indoors. Most iSUP come with their own storage bag, and you should consider getting one for a solid SUP as well. The storage bag is an extra layer of protection that keeps your board safe from scratches and the like.

Buyer's Guide for Best SUP Boards

I know that choosing a stand up paddle board is a big decision. It can really seem like a daunting task when you are not sure what makes up a good board. Below is all the information you need to know when choosing a SUP.

Construction

The very first thing you need to decide on is whether you want an inflatable SUP or a solid one.

Inflatable SUP
Inflatable SUPs are great for lazy days at the lake, doing yoga or fishing. These are perfect beginner to intermediate boards. They are incredibly durable and easy to store and travel with. They also usually come with their own storage bag among other things.

It is important to note that iSUP are not in any way suitable for surfing. They will also sometimes leak air and sag in the center.

Solid SUP
A solid SUP is designed for performance and is great for racing, touring and surfing small waves. These boards are equally great for beginners as they are for experienced riders. They are heavier than iSUPs and more difficult to travel with, but they also last longer.

Activities

Once you have decided whether you want a solid or inflatable paddle board, the next thing you need to decide is what you want to use it for. SUPs can be used for a variety of activities, and there are specialty boards designed only for certain things.

Yoga and fishing can be done on the same type of stand up paddle board, as they both require still water. These SUPs are designed to be stable and comfortable, and have the features necessary for your gear and equipment.

If you want a paddle board for fishing, you will need one that has plenty of room and D-rings for your gear. It also needs to have excellent buoyancy.

Yoga boards need to be incredibly stable to accommodate the shifting poses and balance required during the session.
Yes, there are yoga-specific SUPs, but these 2 activities generally require the same features.

Touring SUPs are designed for long distance with a unique construction, while surfing SUPs are created with performance and responsiveness in mind.

The best stand up paddle boards are the versatile all-rounders. They have a combination of features and are designed and constructed for multiple activities. An all-round board can be perfectly stable for yoga, but still incredibly responsive for surfing.

Best SUP Board Size

When choosing a the best SUP bouard, you want a board with enough buoyancy and stability to hold your weight without sinking. This is especially true for iSUPs as you do not want a board that will sag under your weight.

Be sure that you weigh less than the maximum capacity that the board can handle. Do not cut it too close. There is no reason to assume that you will not at one point have extra gear or ever an extra person on the board with you. Taking a bigger board will be highly advantageous.

Review the dimensions and specifications of the SUP before you purchase it to ensure that it matches your needs.
