Buyer's Guide for Pedal Kayaks

When choosing a pedal kayak you should first decide what type of kayaking you want to do.
Most pedal kayaks are not great for the rougher water, so if you want to have the facility to use your kayak on both calm and rougher water,  you may want to choose a pedal kayak that can have the drive removed so you can just use the paddle.

Stability

Make sure you choose a kayak that is wide and has good stability. With the added motion peddling will create you don’t want to be subject to capsizing with the smallest of swells or wakes from other vessels.

Capacity and Material

Most pedal kayaks are made from High-density polyethylene material. The weight of the drive system and the added pressure from peddling means the drive needs to be mounted in a solid frame. Polyethylene is one of the lightest materials strong enough to hand the pressure of peddling.

Inflatable kayaks are not strong enough to handle the weight or stress of a pedal drive system.

Because of the extra weight of the drive, you should pay attention tot he capacity a kayak can support. As most of the yaks are made from polyethylene, the capacity is usually above 400 lbs which is enough for you and your gear.
